John Tobias
With over 1200 field days in wilderness therapy and outdoor education, John Tobias’s coaching is deeply rooted in his experience as a teacher, mentor, and guide.
John’s outdoor career began in 1994 when he began working as an instructor for the Boulder Outdoor Survival School (BOSS). It was here in the awe-inspiring red rock country of Southern Utah that he began to encounter the life-changing potential of time spent deliberately in the wilderness. While at BOSS, John began to hone his leadership and group-facilitation skills as a lead instructor, responsible for facilitating a challenging and rewarding experience for all participants.
In 1998, John was hired by the Aspen Achievement Academy as a field instructor, beginning a long, successful stint as one of the more well-renowned instructors in the wilderness therapy industry. John continued to work at Aspen intermittently through 2007. While at Aspen, his duties included staff training and development, and management of both staff and student well-being.
John also worked as a field guide at Outward Bound during the summers of 1999 and 2000 leading backpacking and mountaineering trips. In 2004 he spent time at Outback Therapeutic Expeditions where he worked as a field staff and staff developer. His extensive field time provides the insight into adolescent/young adult behavior that he builds upon with his coaching.
It’s John’s belief that a powerful wilderness therapy experience can become a foundation of lasting change in a young adult’s life. A certified Personal Fitness Trainer (PFT), John has received training in a diversity of areas, from wilderness medicine to group facilitation, and he is currently studying psychology at the University of Utah. When not working with adolescents/young adults, John can be found in the yoga studio, on his road bike, or practicing mixed-martial arts. He enjoys pushing himself mentally and physically in a variety of realms. The study of personal development informs both his personal and professional lives.
