Dr. Joshua J. Cluff

Resident Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Joshua Cluff holds an M.A. and PsyD in Clinical Psychology from the American Psychological Association accredited John F. Kennedy University.

After his first season as a field instructor in 1994, Joshua knew he would commit his life to supporting adolescents, young adults and their families.  After six years and nearly 700 field days, Joshua left Wilderness Therapy to pursue studies in clinical psychology with the goal of contributing to the growth and evolution of wilderness therapy. In 2002, Joshua received his BA from The Evergreen State College with an emphasis on Trauma Studies and Multicultural Counseling. During his ensuing master’s and doctoral work Joshua worked with a wide range of populations, including adolescent victims of sexual/emotional abuse, elementary-aged inner-city youth, at-risk adolescents and their families, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered youth and adults, adult perpetrators with developmental disorders, adults in a community mental health setting, and university-aged students, faculty, and their families.

Passionate about crisis intervention, Joshua worked for 19 months as both a phone-based crisis counselor and a clinical member of the Berkeley Mobile-Crisis Team, providing field-based and on-site crisis intervention, response, assessment, de-escalation and mediation for the city of Berkeley, CA. Joshua then completed his pre-doctoral internship with the American Psychological Association accredited Counseling and Psychological Services at Oregon State University, providing psychotherapeutic and outreach services to students, faculty, and their dependents. Joshua also worked in a private community counseling center working with adults, adolescents, and families. It was during this time that his passion for working with families in crisis and transition deepened.

Throughout his clinical career, Joshua has designed and led parenting seminars, couples intensives, and workshops supporting adolescents and young adults struggling with life transitions. To coaching, Joshua works to bridge his experience and training as a clinical psychologist with a commitment to supporting his clients in manifesting long-term change.

Joshua balances his work as a coach by seeing both adolescent and young-adult clients in wilderness therapy.  He also provides psychological assessment and evaluation for clients in wilderness therapy.

Joshua brings a wide variety of unique life experiences to his work, including several years as a soldier in a Special Forces unit, overseas work with the Drug Enforcement Agency, rowing for his college varsity crew team, traveling solo through Asia, starting an environmental education program for inner-city youth, and being a parent himself.

Joshua lives in Durango, Colorado with his wife of 14 years, his son Wilder, and a growing pack of Boston Terriers. In his free time, Joshua enjoys getting lost in the woods with his family, sea kayaking, mountain biking, telemark skiing, and restoring and old Land Cruiser he saved from a rust heap in New Zealand.
